When it comes to beauty, trends come and go — and come again. Like blue eye shadow and body glitter, the latest look staging a comeback is the colorful mascara of your childhood. Before models walked down the runway at fall 2018 shows like Dries Van Noten and Salvatore Ferragamo, their lashes were painted in bright pops of color, and more and more celebrity makeup artists are ditching black for vibrant shades (see Rihanna’s bubblegum pink Coachella look courtesy of Priscilla Ono above). To keep up, it seems that designer and drugstore brands are launching colored mascaras in droves, giving consumers like us countless options to choose from.

Still, we get it, the idea of wearing a crayon-colored mascara on a normal day is intimidating. But trust us when we say that there are really few looks as dramatic yet somehow still totally wearable. Whether you choose royal blue, deep emerald, or shocking pink, when worn well, colorful mascara can enhance your eyes, making them appear brighter and more awake. Layer one over your favorite black mascara for just a subtle tint or coat your top and bottom lashes for color that really pops. Whatever you do, just keep the rest of your makeup minimal so that your beauty look doesn’t become too busy.

Check out some of our favorite colored mascaras below.

NYX Color Mascara ($7; nyxcosmetics.com)

With one of the widest ranges of colored mascara, NYX provides an ultra-pigmented formula that promises to add volume and length, too.

Urban Decay Double Team Special Effect Colored Mascara ($24; ulta.com)

Available in five color combos — pink, turquoise, purple, and more — one wand delivers intense color while the other adds a subtle coat of sparkle.

Diorshow Pump’n’Volume Mascara ($30; bloomingdales.com)

Diorshow is a cult-fave for a reason — it thickens and lengthens lashes without clumping. Choose from blue, coral, pink, and purple.

Lancôme Monsieur Big Color Lash Top Coat ($12; bloomingdales.com)

Ease your way into colored mascara with this top coat, available in blue, gold, green, and pink. Once your mascara dries, try coating the tips of lashes to deposit less color.

Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Couture Mascara ($29; sephora.com)

Whether you go with emerald green, bright blue, or playful pink, the smudge-proof color clings to every lash for an intense, high-shine effect that lasts.
