Meghan Markle Wore a Thing: Navy Carolina Herrera Wrap Dress Edition

Ever since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, the world's eyes have been fixed on Meghan Markle — and her style. We'll be following the Meghan Markle Effect™ with our column, "Meghan Markle Wore a Thing."

They say life isn't full of enough surprises, so on Thursday, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle took that to heart and surprised event-goers at Duke of Sussex Prince Harry's charity fundraising polo match, in support of children affected by AIDS.

For the occasion, the Duchess wore a navy, chambray-like belted wrap dress courtesy of Carolina Herrera's Resort 2019 collection — also known as Wes Gordon's fantastic debut as creative director of the American legacy house. The Duchess has formally worn Gordon's designs for Carolina Herrera in the past, most recently a powder pink off-the-shoulder two-piece set at the Trooping the Colour celebrations at Buckingham Palace last month.

Thursday's look, however, is decidedly more casual as it's not for a formal ceremony: She paired the denim-style dress with J.Crew's Fan Rattan Clutch, Aquazzura's nude Deneuve 105 Pumps and a pair of blue topaz Bee Chic earrings from Canadian jeweler Birks.

Something I can't help thinking about: When one is a Duchess, surprise appearances occur at polo matches of all places, rather than at wine-bar happy hours at which you told your friends you'd "try to make it" if you were able to "get out of the office in time." Whatever!
