The main features of folk costumes

Fashion historians argue that the Russian folk costume began to emerge in the twelfth century. The suit, which is known today as a Russian national, was formed in the Petrine era. At the end of the seventeenth century Peter the Great introduced a new canons image of the representative of nobility and Russian national dress remained commoners, peasants and clergy. Russian peasantry became the layer of society, which for more century preserved its national clothes unchanged, while the representatives of noble estates could follow fashion trends.

The images of the Russian costumes draw not only the bright national characteristics, but also signs of religious beliefs, local cultural traditions and, of course, a kind of activity. Costumes of the Northern peoples differed from the costumes southern peasants. But all this was reflected mainly in the women’s image, because men suit remained unvaried and very simple – pants (ports), and a long shirt under your belt. As the top swing dress worn coat, зипун, казакин, the latter could wear and women. The basis of the female costume – the white shirt on top of which is put on a dress and apron. Casual clothes were made of coarse cloth, festive dresses, and wedding clothes were made of brocade, silk and other materials, which are richly decorated with embroidery.

Interior and decor

Clothes of the Russian commoner diversity of colors, the main of which were white, red, blue, green. Red ornaments on white background – typical trait of Russian folk costume. The main patterns on sundresses were, of course, flower – large or small flowers decorated from top to bottom or were delicately woven into the finish with geometrical patterns, which were adopted mainly in the Northern peoples, inhabitants of the Tver, Arkhangelsk, Novgorod provinces. In southern provinces wore suits shades of red, combining it with green, black, white. Was very common patchwork sewing, which was particularly evident in the decoration of the hem sundress. Another distinctive feature of the southern counties was the presence of a very wide belt-sash.

An integral part of the Russian national costume was headdress – кичка or Kika, верхуша, crown cap and, of course, the most famous kokoshnik. Headdresses were decorated with lace motifs embroidered stones and beads and, in contrast to the sometimes very modest dresses, were real works of art.

Women married or просватанные wore, which differed from the suit unmarried. The main element of the costume of a woman already nonfree – a poneva, which gave birth поневному ensemble. A poneva was a woollen skirt made of several scraps of fabric, mainly in the large square of dark-blue color.

National costume was kept as a basic clothing peasant up to the beginning of the twentieth century, after which it remained only in the course of musical ensembles, performers of folk music, and museums, which keep the memory about the past of the Russian people.

Russian folk costume in a new fashion era

National costume replaced by actual fashion trends peculiar way. For example, in 1911 Paul Poiret released in Paris collection of fashionable, in which the use of motifs of traditional Slavic embroidery. In 1976, the young and the restless Yves Saint Laurent again conquered Paris, this time in full Russian collection of the Russian Collection. This posh collection of couturier shocked fashionable public and demonstrated how blouse with lace on the collar, simple skirt to the floor with a belt-sash can become a luxurious evening dresses.
