See Carrie Fisher In the New ‘Star Wars’ Trailer

Carrie Fisher appears posthumously in the trailer for the latest Star Wars film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which, fair warning, has serious potential to make fans of Fisher and the franchise tear up. Keep your tissues handy, and look out for the film in theatres on December 15.

Fisher, who stars in the film as General Leia Organa, plays opposite Adam Driver, who portrays her son Kylo Ren. In the trailer, she looks pensive and nervous as Ren threatens to blow up her ship. At one point, while hurtling through outer space, Ren says: “Let the past die…Kill it, if you have to. That’s the only way you’ll become what you’re meant to be.”

No, you’re crying. Oh, and in case that wasn’t enough, here’s a picture of Fisher’s beloved dog watching her in the trailer.

Fisher died last December at the age of 60 following four days in the intensive care unit at UCLA Medical Center. The cause of death was cardiac arrest. One day later, her mother, the actress Debbie Reynolds, died following a stroke. Fisher’s legacy as both an actress and a writer lives on, with many fans remembering her distinctly un-Hollywood attitude and openness in discussing her ongoing struggles with addiction and mental health issues.

Fisher completed her role in The Last Jedi in the summer of 2016, and according to a report in Vanity Fair, was eager to do more in subsequent films. “She was having a blast,” said Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm. “The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, ‘I’d better be at the forefront of IX!’ Because Harrison was front and center on VII, and Mark is front and center on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.”
