Got produce? Check your refrigerators for vegetables that have been recalled because of the possibility of listeria contamination. Mann Packing, a nation-wide produce provider located in Salinas, CA, issued the recall last week after their minimally-processed vegetable products tested positive for Listeria during a random sampling by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. A report by the FDA says recalled products are marked with “best if used by” dates from October 11 to 20. It includes products by Archer Farms, HEB, Little Salad Bar, Signature Farms, and Sysco Natural.

What exactly are the risks? Well, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Listeria can cause fever and diarrhea similar to other foodborne germs and cases of food poisoning, but Listeriosis (a type of Listeria infection) is rarely diagnosed and has symptoms that vary depending on whether or not the host is pregnant (it can cause miscarriage or illness in newborns). Symptoms for healthy individuals are mild, including headache, confusion, fever, and muscle aches.

Before you start checking WebMD, you should know that this recall is being done as a precautionary measure, and public health officials have not yet reported any illnesses associated with the product. The FDA suggests you either toss your at-risk produce or return it to the grocer for a full refund, because let’s face it, you paid good money for that stuff.
